Hidden Treasures of the Himachal

A Himalayan Pause: From Apple Orchards to Ancient Passes
This journey isn’t just about moving from one destination to another; it is a slow-motion immersion into the soul of Himachal. Moving away from the crowded tourist circuits, this trail takes you through the heritage-soaked apple heartland of Thanedar, over the rugged spine of the Jalori Pass, and into the mist-covered meadows of Shoja and Sounagi.
It is a trip designed for those who prefer the crackle of a campfire over the hum of a city, home-cooked mountain meals over buffet lines, and the quiet rhythm of village life over a ticking clock. From the architectural marvel of the Atal Tunnel to the sacred stillness of high-altitude lakes, this itinerary balances the thrill of the road with the deep peace of the woods.
Tour Highlights
The Thanedar Heritage: Stay in the cradle of India’s apple revolution. Visit the historic St. Mary’s Church, one of the oldest in the region, and experience the warm, authentic hospitality of a traditional Himachali homestay.
The Jalori Challenge: Experience one of the most dramatic drives in the Himalayas. Crossing Jalori Pass is a rite of passage, offering panoramic views of the Dhauladhar and Pir Panjal ranges.
Sacred Serolsar Lake: A soulful 5 km trek through dense forests of oak and pine leads you to the emerald waters of Serolsar Lake, a site steeped in local folklore and unmatched serenity.
Authentic Village Life: Spend time in Jamala and Sarchi, untouched hamlets where stone-and-wood architecture and the unhurried pace of the locals offer a glimpse into a world unchanged by time.
A Brush with History: Walk through the corridors of the 500-year-old Naggar Castle, a stunning example of Kathkuni architecture that offers a vantage point over the entire Kullu Valley.
The Modern Marvel: Drive through the Atal Tunnel, an engineering feat that acts as a portal between the lush greens of Kullu and the stark, high-altitude landscapes of the North.
Beas River Adventure: Contrast the quiet mountain walks with the adrenaline of white-water rafting on the Beas River, followed by a peaceful evening in a pine-shrouded homestay in Sounagi.
Manali Unplugged: From the spiritual quiet of Hadimba Temple to the bohemian vibes of Old Manali, experience the best of this iconic mountain town before heading back to the plains.
Day 1 — Chandigarh to Thanedar
The journey begins the moment the plains disappear in your rearview mirror. Arrive at your homestay, drop your bags, and surrender to the mountains. As night falls, gather around a crackling campfire, trade stories with your host, and let the dog steal the spotlight. Dinner is home-cooked, warm, and exactly what you didn’t know you needed.
Day 2 — Thanedar
Rise before the world wakes up and head to the lake with breakfast in your pack. On the way back, pause at St. Mary’s Church — a colonial-era chapel that sits in the hills with quiet grace. The afternoon is yours to rest. Come evening, wander through Thanedar’s unhurried village market and let life slow all the way down.
Day 3 — Thanedar to Shoja via Jalori Pass
This drive is the heart of the journey. Jalori Pass throws hairpin bends, ancient forests, and staggering views at you in equal measure. By afternoon, little Shoja welcomes you in. Check in, settle down, and let evening tea and snacks do their work against that view.
Day 4 — Serolsar Lake Trek,
Shoja A gentle 5 km walk through oak and pine leads you to Serolsar Lake — sacred, still, and impossibly serene. Pack lunch and fruit are sorted; all you carry is a light pack and a lighter mind. Back by evening, feet tired, spirit full.
Day 5 — Jamala Village & Sarchi A quiet day of local exploration
Jamala and Sarchi are the kind of places where nothing extraordinary happens and yet everything feels memorable. Back to the homestay for another night under Shoja’s impossibly starry sky.
Day 6 — Shoja to Sounagi
History before adrenaline: Naggar Castle’s 500-year-old stone walls overlook the Kullu valley with the confidence of something that’s seen it all. Then, the Beas River has other plans — strap in for some white-water rafting before settling into your pine-surrounded Sounagi homestay.
Day 7 — Atal Tunnel & Manali Sightseeing
Start slow with a morning pine walk. Then go through the Atal Tunnel — one of the world’s longest high-altitude road tunnels — and emerge into a different world. Manali delivers the full mountain-town experience: Old Manali’s winding alleys, the ancient Hadimba Temple, steaming momos, and the organised chaos of Mall Road.
Day 8 — Sounagi to Chandigarh
The drive back is long but the memories are longer. Chandigarh by evening, a flight to catch — and somewhere in the back of your mind, the mountains are already calling you back.
